18 Creative Holiday Gift Ideas That Won’t Break the Bank
Part 1 of the 2024 Holiday Stress Series
Although there are signs that holiday spending this year is more generous than anticipated, the financial impact of holiday gift-giving can be stressful for many parents. Holiday shopping once conjured images of joy and excitement for many parents, but it’s become synonymous with pressure and expectation more so than generosity and love.
In this inaugural post as part of my Holiday Stress Series, I’m tackling ways to save money on holiday gifting without losing the joy and connection that comes with giving. This season, it’s time to get creative and rethink what gifting means, focusing less on financial expense and more on meaning and thoughtfulness.

The Financial Strain is Real
Economic pressure is still a reality for many families as we head into the thick of the 2024 holiday season. While inflation rates have started to cool, grocery prices remain stubbornly high, and many families continue to grapple with resumed student loan payments. With these financial challenges in mind, many parents are looking for ways to stretch their dollars further this year. The good news? There are plenty of creative, low-cost, and even free options that can bring joy and relief, while keeping your budget intact.
How to Reduce the Stress of Gift-Giving
Here are 18 creative ways to rethink gifting this year, so you can celebrate the season without spending a fortune.
1. Give a Thoughtful Card
A personal note can sometimes be more cherished than a physical gift. Take the time to write a heartfelt message to show your gratitude and appreciation. A card with a well-thought-out note can have a lasting impact that store-bought cards and gifts simply can’t match.
2. Shop Secondhand
Consider finding unique gifts at local thrift stores, flea markets, or online secondhand platforms. Buying secondhand can offer significant savings, and according to a study by OfferUp, a whopping 70% of people said they’re open to such gifts. Gifting a vintage or pre-loved item may be the perfect way to show a loved one that you care about them and sustainability.
3. Uncover Hidden Rewards
Credit card rewards programs, cash-back apps like Fetch and iBotta, or even store loyalty programs can hold unused points. Now is the time to cash them in for gift cards or cashback. It’s essentially like using “found money” for your holiday shopping. I ended up gifting a $50 gift card to my husband this year for a favorite store of his and I didn’t have to spend a dime that I hadn’t already spent on groceries throughout the year.
4. Host a Toy or Item Swap
Coordinate a gift swap with friends or neighbors. Exchanging gently used toys, books, or household items can provide your child (or loved one) with a “new-to-them” gift, without spending a dime. Alternatively, join your local Buy Nothing group and see what finds you can score!
5. Gift Homemade Treats
A batch of homemade cookies or a jar of your famous jam can be a delicious and thoughtful gift. Edible gifts are always appreciated, and they allow you to offer something personal and special while staying within budget. I have been gifting my peppermint chocolate chip cookies for the last 7 years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. They are THAT beloved!
6. Offset the Cost of Gifts
Decluttering can be both a therapeutic and financially savvy move. Use platforms like Facebook Marketplace or eBay to sell items you no longer need. Use the extra cash to fund your holiday gifting while clearing space in your home. In addition, you can consider creating a side hustle to bring in some extra income. And you never know…perhaps that side hustle finds momentum and continues beyond the holidays!
7. Offer Coupons for Experiences
Create a coupon booklet offering experiences rather than physical gifts. These could be things like a “Yes Day” for your kids, a coffee date with a friend, or a homemade dinner. Not only are these thoughtful gifts, but they also offer a personal touch that can’t be bought in a store. The coupon allows you to print and wrap a gift to give, yet delays the need to pay for a gift until later…that is if payment is even needed! (I offer templates in my FREE Ultimate Holiday Guide: 2024 Edition!)
8. Gift Your Time
Offering your time can be invaluable. Whether it’s babysitting for a friend, helping someone tackle a project, or spending one-on-one time with your child, these acts of service can be the most meaningful gifts of all.
9. Make DIY Crafts
Use your creative skills to craft something special. From homemade sugar scrubs to candles or knitted scarves, handmade gifts show love and effort and often cost much less than store-bought alternatives.
10. Be Honest and Real
Sometimes, the best gift you can give is honesty. If this year has been tough financially, be open with friends and family about pausing gift exchanges. They’ll likely appreciate your candor and may even feel relieved to follow suit.
11. Create Memory Scrapbooks
Put together a scrapbook of cherished moments with your loved ones. You can include photos, handwritten notes, or mementos from experiences you’ve shared. A sentimental gift like this doesn’t need to cost much but can be treasured for years to come. You can even do a digital version right from your phone!
12. Digital Gifts
Subscriptions to services like meditation apps, online fitness programs, or audiobooks can offer months of value. These gifts are thoughtful and provide lasting benefits, often at a fraction of the cost of physical items. Read over this list of digital items to see if something sparks your interest!
13. No-Gift Get-Togethers
Instead of exchanging gifts, why not host a potluck or game night with family and friends? The focus shifts from material items to the joy of spending time together, which is often more meaningful than any present.
14. Secret Santa Gift Exchange
Want to exchange gifts with a large group, but want to put some boundaries or limits in place? Host a Secret Santa gift exchange! Just one useful, thoughtful, or fun gift per person and you can have an entire night of laughter and entertainment!
15. DIY Kits
Prepare kits for activities like making candles, bath bombs, or hot chocolate. The interactive element of a DIY kit adds an extra layer of enjoyment, and these gifts can be affordable to create.
16. Regift Thoughtfully
If you have new or gently used items that you no longer need, consider regifting them to someone who would truly appreciate them. This is especially meaningful if the gift is sentimental in nature and/or has been admired by the recipient for some time.
17. Donate in Someone’s Name
If you know someone who values charitable giving, make a donation in their name to a cause they care about. It’s a meaningful gift that can positively impact the world.
18. Host a Virtual Movie Night
For loved ones who live far away, set up a virtual movie night. Watching a holiday classic together, even from a distance, creates a shared experience that feels warm and connected.
Selfish Reflections
If you’re not enjoying the holiday season as much as you’d like, consider what’s behind that displeasure. Ask yourself what you’d love the holidays to look/feel like if there were no rules or barriers, then inspect what gets in the way of creating that reality. For many, some of the unhappiness this time of year comes from the pressure to spend more money than is comfortable.
Saving money during the holidays doesn’t have to mean skimping on joy. In fact, being fiscally and emotionally intentional could be the catalyst for the joyful and meaningful holidays we dream of. By rethinking how we give, receive, and engage during the holidays, we can focus on thoughtful, meaningful gestures that resonate more deeply than high-priced items ever could.
